Visual illusions caused by facial makeup and cosmetics
Cosmetics can enhance a woman’s facial appearance in multiple ways. For example, makeup can change the apparent shape and size of facial parts such as eyes, nose, and mouth. When our perception of the shape and size of an object differs from reality, it is called a visual illusion. Then such effects of facial makeup can also be considered visual illusions. We have shown many times that visual illusions caused by makeup can be quantitatively measured using psychophysical methods. In this talk, I will discuss various illusions induced by makeup, such as skin lightness illusion, eye size illusion caused by eyeliner/eyeshadow/mascara, eye angle illusion caused by eyebrow angle, face size illusion, gender differences in the perception of makeup, eye size illusion caused by eyeglass frames, the relationship between eye size and facial attractiveness. Finally, I will summarize the principles of why and how facial makeup works.
