Social Change: Lessons from Research of Homophobia

Homophobia has declined in many countries over the last five decades. During this time, most European countries moved from imprisoning gay people to accepting them and protecting them from discrimination. Witnessing such a radical value shift over such a short period puts us in a unique position to study social change. My research programme aims to understand the causes and implications of this decrease in homophobia in order to shed light on social change more generally. Why did homophobia decrease? Was it because of economic development? Was it because of secularisation? Did the media have a role? Can psychologists have an impact on such large-scale change? What are the implications for racism and other forms of prejudice? I try to answer these questions with a variety of methodological approaches, ranging from meta-analysis to discourse analysis, and from secondary data analysis to experiments.
