Sensory experiences of nature and their psychological outcomes
Natural environments are often experienced as pleasant and relaxing, and can lead to improvements in mood and cognition as well as reductions in stress. Much of the research in this field has focused on visual experience. In this talk I summarise results from my research on sounds, smells, and other sensory experiences of nature, and their links to psychological outcomes. I will discuss how this understanding can inform our use of new technologies, such as virtual reality, in creating nature-based experiences in the built environment.
